What
is Deer Antler Velvet?
It is a natural
supplement with no added chemicals or, simply stated, the antlers
of deer. Deer antlers grow extremely rapidly and are naturally
cast every year thus beginning a new cycle of growth. Velvet is
the young antler in a cartilaginous state, harvested both for
its nutritional and medicinal value and to prevent injury to the
stags during the rutting season. Although contrary to the name,
the velvety fur covering is removed during processing and is not
included in the antler velvet supplements.
Is this a completely humane practice?
Absolutely.
The harvesting of velvet is controlled by a strict Veterinary
Code of Conduct in New Zealand, under the supervision of veterinarians.
A local anesthetic is administered at the time of removal when
the antler is mainly formed of cartilage and is well-supplied
with blood vessels. The stags are then immediately released to
graze. Deer in New Zealand are prized animals and their health
and well-being is of the utmost importance to the farmers. This
practice has the endorsement of veterinarians, animal behaviorists
and animal welfarists.
